Tutwiler, Julia Strudwick (1841–1916)
American educator and prison reformer. Born on August 15, 1841, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; died on March 24, 1916, in Birmingham, Alabama; daughter of Henry Tutwiler (an educator and school administrator) and Julia (Ashe) Tutwiler; attended Madame Maroteau's boarding school (Philadelphia), Vassar College, and Deaconesses' Institute (Kaiserswerth, Germany).
Born in 1841 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Julia Strudwick Tutwiler was the third of eleven children of Henry Tutwiler, an educator and school administrator, and Julia Ashe Tutwiler .
Her maternal grandfather Pascal Paoli Ashe was steward of the University of Alabama; her father was a member of the first graduating class of the University of Virginia and had known Thomas Jefferson. Henry founded the Greene Springs School near Havana, Alabama, and encouraged his daughter to pursue her educational interests.
These interests led Tutwiler to attend Madame Maroteau's boarding school in Philadelphi
